Amazon MGM Studios has unveiled a steamy new trailer for their upcoming tennis drama, Challengers. Billed as a romantic sports drama, it sees Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist getting tangled in a love triangle.
The trailer reveals Zendaya’s character, Tashi Donaldson, as a generational tennis talent, with the voiceover proclaiming, “she’s gonna turn our whole family into millionaires.” However, a freak knee injury turns her world upside down, leaving her frustrated and unsure of her future.
We then witness her becoming romantically involved with both Patrick Zweig (O’Connor) and Art Donaldson (Faist) as Nelly Furtado’s ‘Maneater’ plays in the background, accompanying a montage of steamy clips. Fast forward, Tashi and Art are married. Patrick reappears on the scene when he enters the Challengers competition, only to discover that he will play against his former love rival, Art.
The official synopsis for the film reads as follows: “Married to a champion on a losing streak, Tashi’s strategy for her husband’s redemption takes a surprising turn when he must face off against the washed-up Patrick – his former best friend and Tashi’s former boyfriend. As their pasts and presents collide, and tensions run high, Tashi must ask herself, what will it cost to win.”
Originally scheduled for release on August 11, 2023, the film was later rescheduled to September 15, 2023. However, it had to withdraw from its opening slot at the 80th Venice International Film Festival due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike.
Directed by Luca Guadagnino, Challengers will be in cinemas on April 26.
