Following their breakout horror hit Talk to Me, directors Danny and Michael Philippou return with a new psychological nightmare in Bring Her Back. Backed once again by A24, the film is set to arrive in theaters on May 30, and early critics’ reactions suggest it’s another unsettling ride into grief, guilt, and the supernatural.
The story centers on siblings Andy (Billy Barratt) and Piper (Sora Wong), who are placed in the care of foster mother Laura, played by two-time Oscar nominee Sally Hawkins. Still haunted by the death of her own daughter, Laura’s grief festers in eerie and unpredictable ways and her new home seems less like a sanctuary and more like a trap. As the children adjust to their new surroundings, they begin to sense something deeply wrong within the house… and within their caregiver.

A new trailer released by A24 builds on that tension, hinting at unexplained rituals, unsettling behavior, and a dark presence that lingers well beyond the frame. Though much of the footage remains intentionally vague, the emotional and supernatural stakes are clear. And so is the buzz. Early screenings have already stirred strong reactions from horror outlets. “It follows you home,” Fangoria warned. Discussing Film called it “gnarly, genuine terror,” while CinemaBlend went further: “deeply shocking.”
The film also stars Jonah Wren Phillips, Sally-Anne Upton, Stephen Phillips, and Mischa Heywood. As the trailer suggests, Heywood plays Laura’s lost daughter Cathy, whose memory — or maybe something else — drives the foster mother’s strange behavior. “You can’t outrun grief,” one line teases.

The Philippou brothers exploded onto the horror scene with Talk to Me in 2023, a low-budget feature that raked in over $90 million globally. Their follow-up appears to lean further into emotional horror while maintaining the sharp, visceral edge that made their debut such a hit. With A24’s backing and a string of strong early reactions, Bring Her Back could be one of the summer’s standout genre offerings.
Bring Her Back opens in theaters in the US on May 30, UK fans will unfortunately have a two month wait when its released on August 1st. Hopefully the wait is worth it as it’s poised to offer horror lovers another hit of emotional dread with a supernatural twist. The Philippous, clearly, aren’t interested in playing it safe.
