Amazon MGM Studios has released a first look at Madden, an upcoming biopic about football icon John Madden, with Nicolas Cage in the title role and Christian Bale playing legendary Raiders owner Al Davis.
The film follows Madden’s transition from the sidelines to the spotlight, chronicling his rise from NFL head coach to broadcast personality and eventually, a name synonymous with one of the biggest video game franchises in history. While Madden’s 1976 Super Bowl win with the Oakland Raiders will be a key part of the story, the film also explores the foundations of the Madden NFL video game series, which turned his name into a global brand.

David O. Russell, the Oscar-nominated director behind American Hustle and The Fighter, is directing and writing the project. The script is based on earlier work by Cambron Clark. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Russell’s take focuses not just on Madden’s NFL legacy, but also his influence on modern sports entertainment through broadcasting and gaming.
Joining Cage and Bale are John Mulaney as Trip Hawkins, the Electronic Arts founder who helped launch the Madden video game franchise, along with Kathryn Hahn as Madden’s wife, Virginia, and Sienna Miller as Carol Davis, wife of Al Davis.

Madden is being produced by Skydance Sports, with a production team that includes Todd Black, Steve Tisch, Jason Blumenthal, and Russell himself. Executive producers on the project include Michael Strahan and Constance Schwartz-Morini. The film is currently in production in Atlanta.
While no release date has been confirmed, interest in the film is already strong, especially among fans of both football and video games. The Madden NFL series first launched in 1988 and has sold over 130 million copies worldwide, cementing Madden’s place in digital and cultural history.
With Nicolas Cage playing coaching icon John Madden and Christian Bale as the fiercely driven Al Davis, Madden is shaping up to be both a portrait of two influential figures and a look at the broader impact of football culture. From strategy on the field to innovation in media, the film is sure to explore how Madden’s legacy extended far beyond the sidelines.
