Colin Farrell’s ‘The Penguin’ Seeks His Own Corrupted American Dream in Latest Trailer

Colin Farrell seeks power in Gotham City!

At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, fans were treated to a panel for Matt Reeves and Craig Zobel’s eagerly awaited HBO Original series, The Penguin, a spin-off from The Batman. During the event, Colin Farrell joined Hall H via Zoom to unveil a brand-new trailer for the crime drama.

Set one week after the chaos unleashed by Paul Dano‘s Riddler in The Batman, The Penguin continues the story from Matt Reeves’ blockbuster. The series follows Oswald Cobblepot, a.k.a. The Penguin, as he strives to seize control of Gotham’s criminal empire in the wake of the city’s turmoil.

The new trailer features Sofia Falcone (Cristin Milioti) confronting Oz, after she discloses that she’s now ‘rehabilitated’ after having been imprisoned in Arkham. While we also see Farrell’s Oz reflects on his quest for his own version of “the American dream, a beautiful story with a happy ending.” However, he continues, “That ain’t the way the world works. America’s a hustle, not that I’m complaining.”

Farrell’s transformative portrayal of the iconic villain in The Batman garnered widespread critical acclaim, with the prosthetics rendering the actor virtually unrecognizable. Joining Farrell and Milioti in the cast are Michael Zegen, playing Carmine’s son, Alberto; and Clancy Brown, who takes on the role of Salvatore Maroni, one of Gotham’s former top gangsters.

The Comic-Con panel for The Penguin also confirmed that Colin Farrell’s portrayal of the Penguin will return in The Batman Part II. This eight-part series is crucial for Batman fans, serving as the bridge between the two installments of Matt Reeves’ Bat saga.

The series is from DC Studios, the Warner Bros. division overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran. Both The Batman and The Penguin are regarded as separate from the wider DCU plans, existing within their own universe under the Elseworlds banner—a homage to alternate universe stories in DC Comics.

The Penguin will premiere September 19 on Max in the US and Sky in the UK.
