David O. Russell is stepping back into the director’s chair with Shutout, a gritty new drama that brings together acting heavyweight Robert De Niro and rising star Jenna Ortega. The project is one of the buzziest titles heading into the Cannes Film Market, and it marks a fresh creative pairing for a story rooted in old-school hustle and new-generation ambition.
The film centers on Jake Kejeune (De Niro), a seasoned pool hustler whose prime is long behind him but whose instincts remain razor-sharp. His life takes a turn when he encounters Mia (Ortega), a young, untapped talent whose ferocity and raw ability reignite something in him. With Jake stepping in as her mentor, the two dive into the brutal world of underground pool matches where the risks are real, the winnings are huge, and failure comes quick.

Ortega, riding a career high with hits like Wednesday and Scream, takes on a very different role here—one that could further cement her transition from teen horror icon to serious dramatic lead. Meanwhile, De Niro’s return to working with Russell, after their successful collaborations on Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle, adds a layer of prestige to the project.
The script, penned by Alejandro Adams, promises a mix of character depth and competition-driven tension. Production is being overseen by Russell alongside producers Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum of RK Films, and Mark Bomback. The film is expected to generate major interest at Cannes, where Black Bear will be handling international sales. CAA Media Finance is repping the U.S. rights.

“We’re delighted to be collaborating with the acclaimed director David O. Russell and the legendary Robert De Niro,” said RK Films’ Jeff Kirschenbaum. “And especially excited to see Jenna step into the spotlight alongside these two cinematic icons.” he said in a press release issued by RK Films.
With Shutout, Russell aims to deliver a modern sports drama set against a backdrop not often seen in cinema today. If the chemistry between De Niro and Ortega lands, this could be one of the more surprising hits in the upcoming release calendar.
