‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Review: Comic Chaos in a Hilarious and Blood-Soaked Marvel Journey

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman deliver big laughs in this multiverse adventure!

Fifteen years ago, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman first appeared together as Deadpool and Wolverine in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. That brief encounter laid the groundwork for their return, and now, a decade and a half later, they headline the highly anticipated Deadpool & Wolverine. Who could have predicted that Wade Wilson’s disappointing debut would lead to three outstanding Deadpool movies, with the latest storming the box office?

Bursting with some of the best cameos Marvel has ever done, hidden Easter eggs, and long-anticipated fan interactions, this film delivers a nonstop wave of surprises that will have audiences cheering and tossing popcorn in excitement. It’s a daring, blood-soaked, hilarious, and unexpectedly heartfelt journey. Simply put, Deadpool & Wolverine injects a much-needed shot of adrenaline into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The charm of this film — which remains consistently captivating — lies in its broad appeal beyond just franchise loyalists. The movie beautifully pays tribute to a variety of superheroes from the X-Men’s Fox era, celebrating their legacy on the big screen. The callbacks are plentiful and deeply nostalgic. We even get to see a DC superhero actor cosplaying as Wolverine during one parallel universe jaunt. The film is packed with celebrity appearances with many eliciting gasps and cheers from the audience, making it an unforgettable experience. This is a movie you could easily watch again the very next day because, in addition to the outrageously fun cameos, Deadpool and Wolverine make an absolutely perfect duo.

Deadpool finds himself in the clutches of the Time Variance Authority led by Mr Paradox (Matthew Macfadyen) where he learns that his universe is on the brink of collapse. The loss of a crucial “anchor being” has sent chaotic ripples through his world. Determined to save his timeline and prove his worth, Deadpool embarks on a multiverse-hopping adventure to find a replacement for the missing anchor—Wolverine, who turns out to be a self-loathing, drunken mess. After their differences are aired – resolved through slashing, stabbing, and punching in close quarters inside the back of a Honda minivan, redemption seems possible, but they must navigate a whirlwind of effects-driven chaos and face off against Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin), the deranged evil twin of Professor Charles Xavier, all while his universe teeters on the edge of destruction.

Reynolds and Jackman shine together; they are both effortlessly at ease and clearly willing to go to great lengths to entertain. Reynolds, in particular, delivers rapid-fire jokes, poking fun at everything in sight and playfully breaking the fourth wall. He frequently teases Jackman, remarking, “Fox killed him, Disney brought him back. They’re gonna make him do this ‘til he’s 90.” Their dynamic is a constant source of amusement, with the duo’s chemistry and comedic timing ensuring that a smile stays on your face throughout.

Director Shawn Levy nails the tone in this film. While he’s typically known for his comedy, he also proves he has a knack for action, delivering some impressive sequences. Though action hasn’t been his strongest suit in the past, he handles it with remarkable skill here.

Deadpool & Wolverine isn’t shy about acknowledging Marvel’s current “low point” following a series of setbacks. With Kevin Feige’s pledge to prioritize quality over quantity, this film marks a promising beginning to a new era, it really nails the moment we’re in. Instead of hinting at future projects or sequels, the film is solely dedicated to providing an outstanding experience in the here and now.

Jackman’s return as Wolverine certainly raised eyebrows, but Reynolds’ move to bring him back was nothing short of genius. Their on-screen chemistry is fantastic, and it’s a joy to see them together. Jackman’s signature “tough guy” vibe pairs perfectly with Reynolds’ rapid-fire quips. And if Marvel decides to have Jackman play Wolverine until he’s 90, I’m here for it—bring on as many Wolverine crossovers as they want to throw at us, as long as they’re as entertaining as this one. Superhero fatigue? Not if more movies like this are on the horizon.

Deadpool & Wolverine is now playing in theaters worldwide.
