Dwayne Johnson is steering his career into uncharted waters with a new film that trades charm and action for psychological depth and moral ambiguity. Known globally for his blockbuster appeal and larger-than-life presence, Johnson is taking on a character that promises to challenge perceptions of his range.
The project, titled Breakthrough, features Johnson as a manipulative motivational speaker whose influence over vulnerable followers spirals into something far more unsettling. The story is set in Southern California in the early 2000s, just after the hysteria of Y2K, and follows a young man who becomes entangled in the world of a charismatic yet morally murky guru. Johnson’s role as the enigmatic figurehead marks a stark departure from his usual high-energy fare.

In a statement shared via Instagram, Johnson spoke about the shift in direction: “I’ve been very hungry (and grateful) for this kind of challenge. The story is a deep dark psychological dive into the culture of motivational ‘gurus’, and those souls seeking to find their greater purpose in life. It’s a character I can try to unhinge. And perhaps rip open.”
At present, Johnson remains the only confirmed cast member. Details about the film’s director are also under wraps, but the screenplay comes from Zeke Goodman, known for his acting roles in Amazon’s rebooted series I Know What You Did Last Summer and Cruel Intentions. Breakthrough will be his screenwriting debut.

This new thriller also extends Johnson’s ongoing collaboration with A24. The actor is already working with the studio on The Smashing Machine, a biopic directed by Benny Safdie (Uncut Gems) where Johnson plays MMA legend Mark Kerr. That film, also starring Emily Blunt, is scheduled to hit cinemas on October 3.
While Breakthrough has yet to enter production, Johnson’s commitment to the role signals a deliberate pivot in his career. The People’s Champ appears ready to peel back the layers and step into the dark.
