Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell star in A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, a genre-blurring romance helmed by visionary director Kogonada. Sony Pictures has dropped the official trailer for the film, revealing a lush, magical tale that blends time travel with emotional introspection.
The film centers on Sarah (Robbie) and David (Farrell), two strangers whose lives intersect at a wedding, only for them to be swept into an unexpected voyage through pivotal moments from their past. According to the official synopsis, “What if you could open a doorway and walk through it to re-live a defining moment from your past?” It’s a premise that dabbles in fantasy, but stays rooted in human experience.

As Sarah and David navigate surreal doorways into their pasts, the film explores how single decisions can echo across a lifetime. Moments once forgotten are pulled back into focus, asking whether understanding where you came from might change where you’re going. Kogonada’s direction looks to lean into the emotional complexity, and balancing the narrative with striking visuals.
Farrell, speaking to Collider, described the project as “kind of a love story, but it’s not a very typical one.” He added, “It’s definitely magical realism. It’s grounded in a world that we recognize, but it also is removed enough into the world of fantastical that it goes into these kinds of whimsical places.” That balancing act—earthy and ethereal—is something Kogonada has navigated before in After Yang, where Farrell and co-star Jodie Turner-Smith first worked with the director.

Scripted by The Menu writer Seth Reiss, the film also features a supporting cast that includes Lily Rabe, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Billy Magnussen, and Hamish Linklater. Behind the scenes, a robust production team includes Reiss, Bradley Thomas, Ryan Friedkin, and Youree Henley as producers. Kogonada shares executive producer credits with Ilene Feldman, Ori Eisen, Gino Falsetto, and others.
A Big Bold Beautiful Journey arrives in theaters on September 19. You can watch the trailer below.
