After Matt Damon and Casey Affleck both appeared in last summer’s huge hit Oppenheimer, the pair will now star alongside each other in Doug Liman’s latest feature, The Instigators.
The new movie, said to be a buddy comedy, will see them return to their Boston roots for the upcoming heist flick. They will aim to pull off a robbery of the ill-gained earnings of a corrupt politician.
Affleck has co-written the project alongside Chuck MacLean, speaking to EW he details his inspirations “The inspiration for this was definitely Midnight Run and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.”
The official synopsis reads, Matt Damon stars as Rory, a desperate father who reluctantly joins forces with Cobby (Affleck), an ex-con, to pull off a robbery of the ill-gained earnings of a corrupt politician. When things go to hell, the pair find themselves engulfed in a whirlwind of chaos, pursued not only by the police but also backward bureaucrats and vengeful crime bosses.
The film reunites Damon with director Liman for the first time since The Bourne Identity. Damon can’t believe it’s taken 20 years to re-team with him, saying, “I absolutely love working with Doug. I can’t believe it took us 20 years to find something else to do together. Doug is one of the most creatively tenacious people I’ve ever met. He just won’t stop until the movie is as good as it can be, and that is the best possible thing you can feel from a director. I trust him completely.”
The Instigators will premiere in select theaters on August 2, followed by its streaming debut on Apple TV+ on August 9.
