It’s hard to believe two decades have passed since we were first swept into the Wizarding World. Now, excitement is building once again as a fresh Harry Potter adaptation for television is in the works. Helmed by Succession talents Mark Mylod and Francesca Gardiner, the reboot is steadily progressing for HBO, with an open casting call for the new Golden Trio going live just last week. However, fans may need to wait a bit longer as reports suggest the release could now be pushed to 2026 or even 2027.
The new Harry Potter TV series, initially announced in April 2023, will bring all seven books of the iconic series to the small screen. Originally planned as an exclusive for the Max streaming platform, it has since been revealed that the adaptation will carry the prestigious HBO Original label. Though the creative team has been assembled and work is well underway, an official release date has yet to be confirmed.
Following the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, shared updates with Deadline about the show’s development. Bloys confirmed that Succession director Mark Mylod had started working on the series, with the writers already crafting scripts. Though progress is being made, the casting process for the beloved characters of Harry, Ron, and Hermione is still ongoing, leaving fans eagerly anticipating more news.
Writers have started. Mark Mylod has started. The team, they’re hiring department heads, casting, and we’re off… We haven’t announced any [date]. I think they were talking about age [the young actors] will be in March, that doesn’t mean necessarily a production start date. [We’re looking at a] late ’26-’27 [release]. Writers are just getting started so it’s too soon to talk about airdate.

Gary Oldman is Up for a Fresh Role in Harry Potter TV Series
Longtime fans of the original film series will be intrigued to hear that Gary Oldman, who played Sirius Black in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, expressed interest in returning to the franchise, though in a different role. While speaking to IndieWire on the Emmy red carpet, Oldman admitted he hadn’t been approached to reprise his role as Harry’s godfather, but jokingly suggested that he could see himself taking on a new part—perhaps even the role of Dumbledore. “I love Sirius,” he said, but hinted that he wouldn’t mind stepping into the shoes of Hogwarts’ legendary headmaster someday “Maybe in a few years, I could do Dumbledore.”
As casting continues, and with the series eyeing a hopeful 2026 release date, fans will soon learn who will be boarding the Hogwarts Express for this new adventure. While the 2026 target remains optimistic, there’s anticipation that production will stay on track. Stay tuned as we await more magical updates!
