Ilya Naishuller is back in familiar territory: high-octane chaos laced with comedy. Best known for the frenzy of Hardcore Henry and the bone-crunching flair of Nobody, the director now takes aim at global politics, with a bazooka. His latest, Heads of State, will land on Prime Video this July 2.
The film pairs Idris Elba and John Cena as rival heads of government forced into a most inconvenient alliance. Elba plays UK Prime Minister Sam Clarke, while Cena steps into the role of U.S. President Will Derringer, a man who clearly hasn’t quite let go of his Hollywood past. Together, they’re caught in the crosshairs of a formidable international enemy. As their security crumbles, their only option is to trust each other. Which, for these two, might be the toughest part.

Their uneasy truce is further tested by the arrival of MI6 operative Noel Bisset, played by Priyanka Chopra Jonas. She’s sharp, unshakable, and more than capable of stealing scenes. As chaos erupts around them, she becomes their only hope of navigating the mess with at least some dignity intact.
The official synopsis from Amazon MGM Studios reads: “The UK Prime Minister Sam Clarke and U.S. President Will Derringer have a not-so-friendly and very public rivalry that jeopardizes their countries’ ‘special relationship.’ But when they become the targets of a powerful and ruthless foreign adversary… they are begrudgingly forced to rely on the only two people they can trust: each other.”

The screenplay, penned by Josh Appelbaum, André Nemec, and Harrison Query (with a story by Query), brings a mix of punchline-heavy banter and globe-trotting urgency. It’s international espionage, mid-air hijinks, and perfectly timed one-liners, delivered with a reckless energy Naishuller can summon.
The supporting cast includes Carla Gugino, Jack Quaid, Stephen Root, and Paddy Considine adding depth (and comedic chops) to the international powder keg. If diplomacy is war by other means, Heads of State throws away the manual and lights a fuse.
Heads of State will be streaming on Amazon Prime Video from July 2.
