The Alien franchise is pushing ahead once again. Following the surprise box office success of Alien: Romulus, director Fede Álvarez has confirmed that cameras will roll on the sequel this October.
Speaking on the Marea Nocturna podcast, Álvarez revealed that he’s been “working quietly behind the scenes on the script and putting plans together.” That work is moving quickly, as pre-production ramps up ahead of the planned fall shoot. The filmmaker also teased bigger ambitions for the next chapter. “Wherever we go now, we can go into uncharted waters,” Álvarez said. “I think it’ll be so exciting to go with characters you know from this movie, to a place in the Alien franchise that we’ve never been before, and to discover things that you’ve never seen before.”

Alien: Romulus debuted in 2024 and earned $350.8 million worldwide against an $80 million budget. That number places it just behind Prometheus as the second-highest-grossing film in the series. The strong performance, paired with positive word of mouth and standout work from stars Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson, appears to have fast-tracked the sequel.
Details about the new story are still under wraps. However, it’s expected that Spaeny’s Rain and Jonsson’s Andy, who survived the events of Romulus will return. With the film’s setting falling chronologically between Alien and Aliens, there’s ample narrative space to explore new threats without disrupting established lore.

The sequel’s development arrives as Ridley Scott, creator of the original Alien, appears ready to pass the torch for good. In a recent interview, Scott remarked that the franchise suffered a creative “deadening” after the third film, suggesting his time with the series is over.
Whether Alien: Romulus 2 deepens the horror or pivots toward something even more ambitious, Álvarez seems eager to evolve the mythos. One rumor—reported by The InSneider—even hints at a potential crossover with Predator, marking what could be the first on-screen collision between the two sci-fi titans since 2007.
For now, all eyes are on October. The next stage of the xenomorph legacy is just months away from coming to life.
