The infection isn’t the only thing evolving in 28 Years Later — so is the marketing. With the release of striking new character posters, Columbia Pictures is setting the stage for the long-awaited next chapter in Danny Boyle’s apocalyptic saga. Each image introduces a key figure in the upcoming film, now just weeks from release, and the mood is as grim as you’d expect.
Front and center is Aaron Taylor-Johnson, stoic and intense, the posters don’t reveal much in the way of emotion or action, but that’s the point. Everyone looks like they’ve seen too much and said too little. The infection may still be raging, but it’s the silence between screams that feels most dangerous.

Someone who is noticeably missing is Jack O’Connell who plays a character named Jimmy Crystal, a figure the actor and the makers have kept close to the vest. Several outlets reporting that Crystal may be the leader of a cult emerging in the wake of civilization’s collapse.
The plot centers on a father and son forced to venture off a fortified island and back onto the infected mainland. The UK has become even more dangerous in the years since the original outbreak, and director Danny Boyle is pushing the intensity. 28 Years Later is the first in a new trilogy, with The Bone Temple already shot and ready to follow. Garland remains the architect behind the story, writing all three entries.

Boyle returns to the universe he helped define, but he’s not looking back. 28 Years Later isn’t just a sequel, it’s a step deeper into dread. 28 Years Later opens in cinemas June 20.
