Although this film may have slipped under the radar when it first premiered towards the end of last year, its recent addition to Netflix in the UK provides a chance for a wider audience to appreciate it. Viewers now have the opportunity to witness Jodie Comer’s outstanding performance as her character navigates a world turned upside down.
In Mahalia Belo’s impressive feature debut, The End We Start From, the unnamed Woman, played brilliantly by Comer, undergoes a life-altering transformation. As she nears the end of her pregnancy, a national catastrophe strikes: London’s flood defenses fail catastrophically, submerging the capital and vast swathes of the country.
With society plunged into chaos and supply lines severed, civilization descends into a desperate struggle for survival, marked by fierce competition for dwindling resources. Panic sets in as Comer’s pregnant character leans on the walls of her home, as her labor pains intensify.
Meanwhile, floodwaters creep insidiously under the front door. Rushed to the hospital, she finds herself promptly evacuated—to the countryside, then to a shelter. Here, she’s separated from her partner (Joel Fry) and encounters another woman (Katherine Waterston) who, like her, is trying to navigate the chaos of this unprecedented catastrophe, after being abandoned by her child’s father before the mayhem fully unfolds.
The film travels a familiar road as its main characters try to survive in a post-apocalyptic world. However, Jodie Comer brings a gentle and down-to-earth approach: in this chaotic new reality, no one has a playbook for motherhood, especially for women thrown into unexpected tragedy.
The End We Start From, directed by Mahalia Belo and co-written with screenwriter Alice Birch, is an adaptation of Megan Hunter’s 2017 novel of the same title. It is now available to watch on Netflix in the UK.
