Apple TV is no stranger to producing stunning sci-fi shows and already boasts a string of hits under its belt, so our hopes are high for the latest addition, Dark Matter. Based on the book by New York Times bestselling author Blake Crouch, it is hailed as one of the best sci-fi novels of the decade.
Dark Matter follows physicist Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton), who finds himself in an alternate version of his life, he has to fight his way back to save his family from another version of himself.

The official description from Apple TV reads, Dark Matter is a story about the road not taken. The series follows Jason Dessen, a physicist, professor and family man who — one night while walking home on the streets of Chicago — is abducted into an alternate version of his life. Wonder quickly turns to nightmare when he tries to return to his reality amid the mind-bending landscape of lives he could have lived. In this labyrinth of realities, he embarks on a harrowing journey to get back to his true family and save them from the most terrifying, unbeatable foe imaginable: himself.
In an interview with Screen Rant, Edgerton discusses how the show offers a reflective lens through which to examine the paths we haven’t taken. He explains, “I call it the multiverse for the middle-aged man. In all seriousness, I loved Everything Everywhere All At Once. I love this general concept of being able to explore alternate realities.”

“Quite often they become big, expansive things that explore these crazy visual effects worlds. And we do a little bit of that, but for the most part, we’re using this multiverse alternate reality concept as a way to look inward to ourselves about the road not taken, about what ifs, about all of these deep human things that we think about.”
Alongside Edgerton, there is an excellent cast that includes Academy Award winner Jennifer Connelly, Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi and Oakes Fegley.

Dark Matter will premiere globally on Apple TV+ with the first two episodes on May 8, followed by weekly episodes up until June 26, 2024.
