Joseph Kosinski, director of Top Gun: Maverick, trades fighter jets for Formula 1 cars in F1, a sleek new racing drama led by Brad Pitt. The film, arriving in theaters June 25 in the UK and two days later June 27 in the US, offers a ultra-realistic dive into the cutthroat world of elite motorsport, following a veteran driver called back for one last race against time, ego, and legacy.
Pitt stars as Sonny Hayes, once hailed as Formula 1’s brightest star until a devastating crash derailed his career in the ‘90s. Now drifting between circuits as a hired gun, Sonny is pulled back into the spotlight by Ruben Cervantes, played by Javier Bardem, a former teammate turned team owner desperate to keep his racing outfit afloat.

Joining the team means sharing the garage with rising talent Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris). A gifted rookie with everything to prove, Pearce isn’t interested in nostalgia. The new trailer that drops today hints at a fierce rivalry between the pair with Pit quipping, “It’s alright… you’re just worried I’m quicker than you,” it’s a simmering rivalry that’s bound to ignite.
Kosinski’s latest project aims to blur the line between cinema and sport. Cars were custom-built using Formula 2 chassis enhanced with F1-grade components, and scenes were shot on location at actual Grand Prix events. The production even enlisted Mercedes engineers to ensure every turn and pit stop rings true.

Real-life F1 icons like Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, and Charles Leclerc appear as themselves, grounding the film in the high-stakes universe fans know well. With Apple Studios and Warner Bros. behind the release, F1 is shaping up to be more than just another sports film, but a precision-tuned experience.
As Hayes seeks redemption and Pearce barrels toward greatness, one thing is clear: in Formula 1, teammates are just competitors with shared branding. Behind the camera, Kosinski reunites with Top Gun: Maverick screenwriter Ehren Kruger and producers Jerry Bruckheimer and Dede Gardner. With a team like that, expect sparks—on and off the track.
