Although 2019’s Joker stood apart from the DCEU and other connected films, it still included a few nods to Gotham’s lore. The movie featured appearances by key figures from the Batman universe, including Bruce Wayne, his butler Alfred, and Thomas and Martha Wayne.
Now alongside The Joker (Joaquin Phoenix) and Harley Quinn (Lady Gaga), Harvey Dent joins the cast of characters in Todd Phillips’ highly anticipated sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux. New footage released by Warner Bros. on Tuesday morning offers a first glimpse of this intriguing lineup. The teaser introduces Harry Lawtey, best known for his role as Robert Spearing in the critically acclaimed HBO series Industry, stepping into the iconic role of Harvey Dent, also known as Two-Face—one of Batman’s most notorious foes.
In Folie à Deux, Harvey Dent is still the unscarred District Attorney, yet to experience the tragic acid incident that defines his Two-Face persona. In the newly released footage, Harry Lawtey’s Dent is seen addressing news cameras, commenting on the actions of Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck from the first film.
In the short clip, Lawtey’s Dent condemns Arthur Fleck, stating, “Arthur Fleck is a monster. He knew exactly what he was doing.” He goes on to highlight the chaos Fleck incited, saying, “His depraved acts of violence led to riots by his followers, and they are still willing to commit acts of violence in his name.”
It seems unlikely that Joker: Folie à Deux will hint at Harvey Dent’s transformation into Two-Face, as these Joker films aren’t designed to follow traditional superhero movie tropes. Dent has been a popular character in Batman adaptations, first brought to the big screen by Billy Dee Williams in Tim Burton’s Batman and later portrayed by Tommy Lee Jones in 1995’s Batman Forever, where his character became Two-Face, partnering with Jim Carrey’s Riddler.
However, the Joker films, including Folie à Deux, aren’t focused on connecting to the broader DC Comics universe. Instead, they use the comic book genre as a platform for exploring deeper, more dramatic stories, so the District Attorney’s fall from grace in Folie à Deux seems very unlikely, whether Lawtey’s version of Dent will transform into Two-Face in Folie à Deux remains to be seen, but for now you can watch the latest teaser below.
Joker: Folie à Deux will be in cinemas worldwide October 4.
