The first official teaser trailer for A Minecraft Movie, the live-action adaptation of the popular video game, has just been released. Alongside the trailer, a new poster and the film’s official plot synopsis were also unveiled.
Video game movies are proving to be big business, with recent successes like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the highly anticipated Sonic the Hedgehog 3 on the way. Now, A Minecraft Movie is poised to join the lineup, aiming to transform the blocky sensation into a cinematic experience.

The trailer shows a group of individuals stepping into the Minecraft universe via a portal, where they find themselves bemused in a visually enhanced version of the game’s iconic blocky world. Leading the cast is Jason Momoa alongside Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen and Emma Myers (of Wednesday fame).
Joining the adventure is Jack Black, who plays ‘Steve,’ the default character model from the Minecraft game. The film also features a range of blocky elements, including square llamas, pigs, trees, sheep, and fortresses.

The official synopsis for A Minecraft Movie reads, “Welcome to the world of Minecraft, where creativity doesn’t just help you craft, it’s essential to one’s survival! Four misfits—Garrett ‘The Garbage Man’ Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Hansen), Natalie (Myers), and Dawn (Brooks)—find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they’ll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Black). Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative…the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.”
A Minecraft Movie is set to debut globally on April 2, 2025.
