The reviews for M. Night Shyamalan’s new film, Trap, are now coming in. After generating considerable excitement with its mysterious trailer, the film’s release was marked by additional intrigue as it was withheld from critics before its U.S. premiere. With the UK release scheduled for Friday, August 9, a week after its U.S. debut on August 2, British cinema-goers are now encountering a mixed range of opinions and reviews.
Written and directed by Shyamalan, this psychological thriller centers on The Butcher, a serial killer who takes his daughter to a concert by pop star Lady Raven (Saleka), only to discover it’s a police setup to apprehend him. Given M. Night Shyamalan’s reputation for crafting films with surprising twists, such as Signs, Unbreakable, and The Sixth Sense, it was anticipated that his latest work would also offer more than meets the eye. Reviews of Trap confirm that the film indeed lives up to this expectation, presenting a plot rich with unexpected turns.
According to Collider’s review, the film presents occasional flashes of M. Night Shyamalan’s earlier brilliance, “M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap showcases glimpses of his former brilliance but ultimately falters with awkward choices and laughable moments.”
IGN has awarded the film a reasonable score of 6, highlighting Josh Hartnett’s performance as a notable strength. “Josh Hartnett anchors Trap with a great performance as a serial killer penned in at a pop concert, but M. Night Shyamalan’s latest film falls apart in its third act.”
The Hollywood Reporter describes it as a “moderately entertaining thriller.” While in a more positive review, The Wrap noted that although the film “doesn’t have the depth of Shyamalan’s most important films or the theatricality of his most memorably weird experiments. It is “one of his best thrillers.”
While our very own Lane Mills described Trap as his “movie of the year so far” with M. Night Shyamalan “at the top of his game.”
UK cinema-goers will have the chance to find out if Josh Hartnett’s serial killer outsmarts his captors at the pop concert starting this Friday, August 9.
