Alexander Payne’s 2017 sci-fi dramedy Downsizing is enjoying a major resurgence on Netflix UK, where it has jumped to the number two spot on the platform’s trending films chart. The film, which stars Matt Damon, has seen renewed interest years after its initial release, it was critically panned at the time but viewers have re- discovered the offbeat story through streaming.
Set in a near-future world grappling with overpopulation and environmental decline, Downsizing explores a groundbreaking scientific procedure that allows people to shrink themselves to a fraction of their size. The process dramatically reduces human environmental impact and in turn, significantly increases an individual’s purchasing power. The film follows Paul Safranek (Damon), an occupational therapist from Omaha, who elects to undergo the irreversible procedure in search of a better life.

Kristen Wiig co-stars as Paul’s wife Audrey, who initially agrees to join him but ultimately has second thoughts. After Paul goes through with the transformation, he must adjust to his new life in Leisureland, one of several purpose-built miniaturized communities designed to cater to the downsized population.
The supporting cast includes Christoph Waltz as Dusan, Paul’s charismatic neighbour with questionable business ethics, and Udo Kier as Konrad, his associate. Hong Chau plays Ngoc Lan Tran, a Vietnamese refugee who lives and works in the downsized world. Chau received critical recognition for her role and was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance.

Payne, known for films like Sideways and The Descendants, took a different approach with Downsizing, combining speculative science fiction with social and political themes.
Downsizing is the latest example of how streaming can breathe new life into older or overlooked films. Its jump up the Netflix UK charts shows just how quickly a title can find a second wind — even years after leaving cinemas.
Downsizing is available to stream on Netflix in the UK and Prime Video in the US.
