Despite ongoing buzz about the return of Mindhunter as a trilogy of feature films, executive producer Charlize Theron is setting expectations straight. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Theron offered a candid update on the future of the critically acclaimed Netflix series.
Asked about the rumored three-film continuation, Theron made it clear that any plans are firmly in the hands of director David Fincher. “I think you know just as well as I do that it’s really in the world of David. It’s up to him, and if he wraps his head around it, then it will happen. I know that he loves this world just as much as I do, but he only does things when he really feels like there’s potential in it. He’s a realist, and if he wants to do it, he’ll do it,” Theron said.

That may not be the update we were hoping for, but it’s a refreshingly honest one. Since Mindhunter season 2 aired in 2019, the show has developed a cult following, with fans regularly calling for its return. The show earned two Emmy nominations and holds an impressive 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite its quality and devoted fan base, Fincher previously noted that production costs were difficult to justify based on viewership numbers.
Theron, who has maintained a strong producing relationship with Netflix through projects like The Old Guard, Hyperdrive, and Murder Mystery 2, remains close to the Mindhunter orbit. But like the rest of us, she’s waiting for Fincher to make the call. And Fincher, famously selective and meticulous, appears to be juggling multiple projects at once.

Among his rumored slate: a Squid Game spin-off set in America, the Tarantino-penned The Adventures of Cliff Booth for Netflix, and a new adaptation of Chinatown. As of now, none of these have been confirmed with release dates, and the director has kept his cards close.
If Fincher does eventually return to the world of Holden Ford and Bill Tench, it’s clear he’ll do it on his own terms and when he’s ready. For fans, that means patience is key. For now, Theron’s update may be the closest thing to closure. And if it ever does happen it’s going to be a long, long way down the road.
