‘Mindhunter’ Revival Hopes Sparked by New Update from Star Holt McCallany

‘Mindhunter’ could return!

After years of silence, the possibility of Mindhunter returning has flickered back to life, and that hope… it’s coming from inside the director’s office.

Holt McCallany, who played Agent Bill Tench in the acclaimed Netflix crime drama, has opened up about recent discussions with series creator David Fincher regarding a possible continuation. Speaking to CBR, McCallany revealed that the next chapter of Mindhunter could take the shape of three feature-length films.

“So look, you know, I had a meeting with David Fincher in his office a few months ago, and he said to me that there is a chance that it may come back as three two-hour movies, but I think it’s just a chance,” McCallany told CBR. “I know there are writers that are working, but you know, David has to be happy with scripts.”

Originally launched in 2017, Mindhunter quickly drew a following for its cerebral storytelling and its grim dive into the early days of FBI criminal profiling. However, the series was put on indefinite hold after its second season in 2019, as Fincher turned to other projects, including Mank and The Killer for Netflix.

McCallany made it clear the return is far from certain. “The sun, the moon, and the stars would all have to align,” he added. “The good news is that we’re at Netflix with The Waterfront, and those movies would also be for Netflix. So I think that in terms of dates and logistics, it could all be worked out, but it has to do, you know, with David really having the time and the inclination and being happy, you know, with the material.”

One major hurdle could be coordinating schedules. Co-star Jonathan Groff is currently on a high following his 2024 Tony Award win, making his availability another potential challenge. McCallany joked that they “gotta wait for the best actor on Broadway.”

While Fincher remains busy prepping The Adventures of Cliff Booth, there’s no confirmed timeline for any Mindhunter revival. Still, the door isn’t closed. And for fans starved of intelligent serial killer drama, that sliver of possibility might be enough to keep hope alive.
