The highly anticipated second season of Netflix’s anthology series, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, is set to explore the sensational trial of the Menendez brothers with the release of its chilling first full trailer. This season revisits the infamous 1996 conviction of Lyle and Erik Menendez for the brutal murders of their parents, raising fresh questions about the case.
With only weeks until its premiere, fans of the series, who were captivated by Ryan Murphy‘s deep dive into the mind of Jeffrey Dahmer in Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, can now look forward to what the creative team has been crafting for the last two years.
The first full trailer, released on Wednesday, delves deeper into the turbulent family dynamics, with Javier Bardem playing José Menendez getting physical with his sons. The trailer highlights the growing tension between the brothers and their parents, ultimately leading to the murders that made them infamous. It opens with the brothers arriving at their home at night, shotguns in hand, and walking through the front door before a series of gunshots are fired.
“Erik and I killed our parents together, so I’d say that makes us pretty close,” says Nicholas Alexander Chavez, as Lyle, during a therapy session. The trailer also sees their arrests and the ensuing trial. “You don’t murder your parents that way,” says Nathan Lane’s character, investigative journalist Dominick Dunne. “Literally defacing them. That’s not about money. That’s about something else deeper and darker.”
Netflix’s official summary reads: Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story follows Lyle and Erik Menendez, two brothers who fatally shot their parents in their Beverly Hills home in 1989. During their trials, the brothers cited years of abuse as the reason for murdering their parents. However, prosecutors argued that their motive was to get their hands on the family fortune.
While the prosecution argued they were seeking to inherit their family fortune, the brothers claimed — and remain adamant to this day, as they serve life sentences without the possibility of parole — that their actions stemmed out of fear from a lifetime of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse at the hands of their parents. Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story dives into the historic case that took the world by storm, paved the way for audiences’ modern-day fascination with true crime, and in return asks those audiences: Who are the real monsters?
Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story will be released on Netflix September 19.
