Joaquin Phoenix and director Ridley Scott have reunited for another historical epic after 2000’s Gladiator. Sony & Apple Original Films have released a second trailer for Napoleon. Phoenix stars as the tyrannical French commander Napoleon Bonaparte.
Napoleon Bonaparte was a French military general and political leader who rose to prominence during the French Revolution. He established himself as First Consul in 1799 and later became Emperor of the French in 1804. Napoleon’s military campaigns, often referred to as the Napoleonic Wars, expanded the French Empire across much of Europe.

The new trailer shows the sheer scale of the film with beautifully shot battle scenes & landscapes including Egypt. The film, alongside charting the rise of the ruthless general, as he expands the French Empire, we will also see his personal relationship with Empress Joséphine (Vanessa Kirby) explored.
Filming began in February 2022 in England, locations included Lincoln, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire & Sussex. Alongside Phoenix & Kirby it also features Tahar Rahim, Ben Miles, Paul Rhys and Matthew Needham.

Napoleon has a high bar to meet after Gladiator won five Oscars including Best Picture. But judging by the trailer and the fact that Scott’s standards rarely drop, with Phoenix looking as strong as ever and the production value and cinematography all looking at top quality, this is an exciting prospect.
Napoleon will be in theaters November 22 with it to follow on Apple TV at some point thereafter.
