New Update on ‘Constantine’ Sequel Revealed

Keanu Reeves is best known for his iconic roles in films such as John Wick and The Matrix . However, one of his most beloved and memorable performances is in Constantine, where he plays the tormented detective-exorcist from the DC Comics universe.

So if you’re eagerly anticipating a Keanu Reeves-led sequel to Constantine, your patience may soon be rewarded. In 2022, it was announced that Reeves and director Francis Lawrence were reuniting for the much-anticipated sequel. However, since then, Warner Bros. and DC have undergone significant creative changes, leaving the current status of the sequel uncertain.

The sequel now appears to be very much in the works and might be closer to completion than expected. Speaking to ComicBook at San Diego Comic-Con, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who is returning for his second Constantine movie, shared some exciting insights.

The script is being written right now, and it’s not that far away, I mean, we’ve got to get a good script, but we’re starting great because the movie star that everybody wants to be in business with wants to be this character again. So there’s a lot of room in that franchise to do the kind of soul-searching, crazy, quasi-religious that made the first movie so satisfying. And it doesn’t surprise me at all why Keanu wants to do that.

Keanu Reeves wants to play John Constantine again

Keanu Reeves’ portrayal of John Constantine in the 2005 film may not have garnered critical acclaim initially, but it has since achieved cult classic status. Featuring Reeves as a supernatural exorcist, Constantine is now celebrated as one of the actor’s most beloved and iconic roles.

Reeves has expressed a strong desire to reprise his role as John Constantine, a sentiment he shared with Stephen Colbert in a 2021 interview, where he revealed that previous attempts had been unsuccessful. However, during his most recent appearance earlier this week, Reeves confirmed that the sequel is now well underway, and he is eagerly awaiting the script.

The no’s started to become a maybe which became a kinda yes, which became maybe they’ll hire a writer and pay a writer … and right now waiting on a script.

The release date for Constantine 2 hinges on the completion of its script. If Keanu Reeves and the team receive the script by the end of the year, production could start in early to mid-2025. Should this timeline hold, the film could potentially hit theaters in 2026.
