Tensions Flare as Javier Bardem Tries to Recruit Brad Pitt’s Sonny Hayes in New Clip from the Racing Drama ‘F1’

“You Don’t Just Walk Off the Street and Pilot a Rocket!”

Brad Pitt is stepping back into the driver’s seat—this time in the world of Formula 1. In F1, a forthcoming feature from Apple Original Films and Warner Bros., Pitt plays Sonny Hayes, a former racing legend drawn out of semi-retirement for one more shot at glory.

In a newly released clip, Javier Bardem’s character, team boss Ruben Cervantes, pleads with Hayes to join his struggling outfit. Hayes says reluctantly: “You’ve got an entire assembly line of kids raised on a simulator.” But he’s looking for more than raw potential. “I don’t have time for some kid to learn how to come in 10th,” he says. Hayes fires back: “You don’t just walk off the street and pilot a rocket.” Check out the clip below.

Pitt’s character has history—a star derailed by a career-ending crash in the ‘90s. Now, he’s a journeyman, ghosting through circuits until Cervantes throws him a lifeline. The catch? He must share the garage with hotshot rookie Joshua Pearce, played by Damson Idris. Tensions run high. In the trailer, Hayes smirks at his younger rival, saying, “It’s alright… you’re just worried I’m quicker than you.” Expect friction to follow.

Joseph Kosinski is once again chasing realism. Cars for the film were adapted from Formula 2 models and fitted with F1-grade parts. Real circuits served as backdrops, and Mercedes engineers lent their expertise to keep everything technically airtight.

The film also taps into the sport’s present-day pulse, featuring real-world F1 stars Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, and Charles Leclerc in cameo roles. This isn’t just about style—it’s about capturing the feel of Formula 1 with pinpoint precision.

With Ehren Kruger writing the script and producers Jerry Bruckheimer and Dede Gardner attached, F1 comes with heavyweight backing and high expectations to match its $300 million budget.

Directed by Top Gun: Maverick helmer Joseph Kosinski, F1 swaps jet fighters for race cars but keeps the adrenaline firmly in the red. The film speeds into UK cinemas on June 25 and hits US screens on June 27.
