Steven Spielberg’s 1985 film The Color Purple was nominated for eleven Academy Awards, it portrayed the adversity and triumph of Celie Harris, played by Whoopi Goldberg, and other black women in the south in the early 1900s.
The remake will star Fantasia Barrino & Halle Bailey as Celie & Nettie.
The Color Purple is the tale of Celie Harris and the tribulation she endures during her life in the South of an early 20th century United States. At fourteen, she is impregnated by her father, after she gives birth the baby is taken away. She is then given to Albert “Mister” Johnson for marriage, separated from her sister Nettie. Mister beats Celie into submission and bans Nettie from their home.
The Color Purple is due in theaters December 2023. Watch the trailer.
