Warner Bros. have released a second trailer for its reimagining of Spielberg’s The Color Purple. The new film adaptation will be based on the Broadway musical which was a huge success taking $103 million in its first year.
Alongside Halle Bailey American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino-Taylor, who served as a replacement for Celie in the original Broadway production, will be seen back in the lead role.
Steven Spielberg’s 1985 film The Color Purple was nominated for eleven Academy Awards. Based on Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. The movie is set in rural Georgia and follows the life of Celie, a young African American woman who faces adversity and abuse throughout her life. The film explores themes of racism, sexism, and the enduring power of female friendship and empowerment.
It is a poignant and emotional portrayal of Celie’s journey towards self-discovery and independence, ultimately finding her voice and identity. The Color Purple is known for its powerful performances one of which handed Oprah Winfrey an Oscar nomination, with its impact in shedding light on the struggles of African American women in the early 20th century.
The trailer starts as Nettie (Halle Bailey) discusses Africa and its queens, explaining to her sibling that this implies their family holds royal lineage. The sisters have a strong bond with Celie saying, “All I have is my sister, she was the only one who ever loved me.”
The film has an impressive cast alongside Bailey & Barrino-Taylor it stars Oscar nominee Taraji P. Henson, Emmy Award winner Colman Domingo, SAG and Tony Award nominee Danielle Brooks, Tony Award nominee Corey Hawkins, Oscar nominee Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor and Oscar- and Grammy-winning artist H.E.R.
Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey come back to the film as producers. It’s directed by Blitz Bazawule and written by Marcus Gardley, Alice Walker & Marsha Norman.
The Color Purple will be in theaters this Christmas, premiering December 25, 2023.
