The curtain is closing on one of horror’s most enduring couples. Ed and Lorraine Warren return for a final confrontation in The Conjuring: Last Rites, with the first trailer promising a chilling send-off. Warner Bros. unveiled the official look this week, teasing what’s being described as the darkest entry in the series to date.
Set in 1986, the film follows the infamous Smurl haunting—a real-life case where a Pennsylvania family claimed to have endured over a decade of demonic attacks. With this installment, the franchise moves forward in its timeline and closes out the core Conjuring narrative. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are back as the Warrens, stepping once more into the line of supernatural fire.

Michael Chaves, who directed The Devil Made Me Do It and The Nun II, takes the reins again. James Wan, who launched the original two films and helped build the broader universe, returns as executive producer. This latest story draws from the book The Haunted, co-authored by the Warrens and the Smurl family, giving the film a firm foundation in documented claims of the paranormal.
In the featurette released alongside the trailer, producer James Wan calls Last Rites “the end of an era.” Chaves adds that this film presents “the darkest thing we’ve ever seen in the series,” raising the stakes both emotionally and spiritually. The trailer gives a glimpse of that tension, with Lorraine ominously noting, “something’s different,” while Ed warns, “Once we start, there is no going back. Anything can happen. And most likely, anything will.” The final shot shows a demon lunging toward Lorraine after chillingly whispering, “We’ve been waiting so patiently… so patiently for you.”

Beyond the horror, Last Rites will explore the Warrens’ struggle to walk away from the work that’s defined their lives. Their desire to help the Smurl family may outweigh the toll it takes—a classic dilemma for the couple.
The Conjuring Universe has brought in more than $2 billion globally since its 2013 debut. Now, with Last Rites hitting theaters—and IMAX—on September 5, the Warrens will close their casebook. But if horror history has taught us anything, it never stays buried for long. You can watch the trailer below.
