It’s guaranteed that we’ll get a second season of the hugely popular and successful series The Last of Us. However, showrunner Craig Mazin has revealed that they have so much material from Part II of the game that the show could potentially span four seasons just to fully explore the story of the second game alone.
The second season of the highly-anticipated video game adaptation is set to premiere in 2025, exploring what we currently know as only a portion of Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part II storyline. Filming began earlier this year in British Columbia, and production is expected to conclude by the end of this summer.
Season one, which premiered in 2023, skyrocketed to success, becoming HBO’s most-watched debut season in history. While the release date for Season 2 remains undisclosed, fans can anticipate its premiere on HBO sometime in 2025, with streaming available on Max in the US and for UK fans the action will be coming to SKY TV.
Mazin has revealed that the second season will consist of only 7 episodes, which is notably shorter than the 10 episodes in the first season. However, he has disclosed that one of the Season 2 episodes will be “quite big” in length. Mazin also indicated that a potential third season would be “significantly larger,” with the possibility of a fourth season also on the table.
Speaking to Deadline, Mazin discusses their plans to advance the show and fully utilize the story from the second game, stating:
The story material that we got from Part II of the game is way more than the story material that was in the first game, so part of what we had to do from the start was figure out how to tell that story across seasons. When you do that, you look for natural breakpoints, and as we laid it out, this season, the national breakpoint felt like it came after seven episodes.
We don’t think that we’re going to be able to tell the story even within two seasons [2 and 3] because we’re taking our time and go down interesting pathways which we did a little bit in Season 1 too. We feel like it’s almost assuredly going to be the case that — as long as people keep watching and we can keep making more television — Season 3 will be significantly larger. And indeed, the story may require Season 4.

The returning cast for Season 2 features of course Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey returning as Joel and Ellie, Gabriel Luna as Tommy, as well as Rutina Wesley as Maria. Joining the ensemble are newly announced cast members including Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Isabela Merced as Dina, Young Mazino as Jesse, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Danny Ramirez as Manny and Spencer Lord as Owen.
The Last of Us Season 2 will make its debut sometime in 2025. Rest assured, we’ll keep you updated on any forthcoming announcements!
