After encountering a multitude of issues leading up to the film’s original release date, initially slated for December 1st, 2023, including the SAG-AFTRA actors’ strike and subsequent abandonment by 20th Century Studios, The Bikeriders has been rescued by Focus Features. They have reinitiated the marketing campaign and assigned a new release date of June 21.
Written and directed by Jeff Nichols, it tells a story inspired by the 1968 photo-book of the same name by Danny Lyon. Lyon rode with and photographed the Chicago Outlaws Motorcycle Club for two years beginning in 1963.

The film follows biker gang leader Johnny (Tom Hardy) as he mentors his potential successor and number two, Benny (Austin Butler). As they navigate their roles, the bikers descend into criminality, violence, prostitution, and drug dealing.
Caught in the middle is Kathy (Jodie Comer), Benny’s wife. Following a hastily arranged marriage, she strives to extract him from the gang’s descent into crime and violence.

In an interview with Deadline, writer and director Jeff Nichols explains how the film came together and emphasizes his intention not to glamorize gang culture.
“I’ve been thinking about this for 20 years,” he says, after reading Lyons book in 2003 “These are not people we want to idolize, but that doesn’t mean they’re not attractive.”
The Bikeriders will be in cinemas June 21.
