‘Top Gun 3’ on the Horizon as Director Joseph Kosinski Teases “Big Idea”

Joseph Kosinski confirms the script is underway for ‘Top Gun 3’.

After dominating the box office with Top Gun: Maverick, Tom Cruise isn’t done flying high. With Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning wrapping up its theatrical run, attention is already shifting toward the third entry in the Top Gun franchise and it’s sounding ambitious.

Director Joseph Kosinski, who helmed Maverick, offered a promising update on the sequel’s development while promoting F1 in a recent interview with Screen Rant. “Ehren Kruger is writing the script as we speak,” Kosinski said. “It’s a big idea that I spent almost a year developing — working with some friends at the Navy and Lockheed. And yeah, Ehren’s into it now, so we’ll see how it comes along.”

Kosinski explained that the concept had to raise the bar after Maverick’s colossal success. “It was about coming up with an idea that — again — felt like a new challenge. Something that opens up the story in a way you just can’t let go. And I think the idea is so ambitious. That’s what’s exciting to me,” he added.

That ambition seems to be matched by momentum. Christopher McQuarrie, a key Cruise collaborator and writer/director of several Mission: Impossible films, previously confirmed that breaking the story for Top Gun 3 “wasn’t hard.” While there’s still no confirmed production date or release window, the speed at which things are moving suggests the film won’t take decades to arrive, unlike the nearly 40-year gap between the original and Maverick.

Kosinski and Cruise have a track record beyond fighter jets. Their first project together, the sci-fi film Oblivion, was released in 2013 and recently saw a spike in streaming numbers after landing on Prime Video. Their continued collaboration seems to be fueled by a shared appetite for high-concept spectacle and it doesn’t seem like they’re easing off the throttle anytime soon.

Cruise remains as prolific as ever, with Top Gun 3, his Mission: Impossible finale, and possibly more on the way. If Kosinski’s pitch takes flight as planned, expect another adrenaline-heavy movie —the 61-year-old continues to operate at blockbuster altitude.
