‘Untamed’ Brings Murder and Mystery to Yosemite in Netflix’s Newest Thriller

Netflix is venturing deep into the wild with its new limited series Untamed, a six-episode mystery-thriller set against the breathtaking and brutal backdrop of Yosemite National Park. The show premieres globally on July 17, bringing with it a tightly wound narrative of crime, mystery, and survival.

Created by Mark L. Smith (The Revenant) and his daughter Elle Smith (The Marsh King’s Daughter), Untamed digs into the hidden violence that can fester in nature’s most picturesque corners. Both Smiths serve as co-showrunners and executive producers on the project. Speaking to Tudum, Mark L. Smith said, “Everyone thinks of Yosemite as this beautiful place with all the vistas and all the scenery, but we were trying to touch on the dangers that are just beyond that.”

Eric Bana leads the cast as Kyle Turner, a federal agent with the National Parks Service Investigative Services Branch, a little-known law enforcement division tasked with keeping order in remote public lands. Turner’s new case? A grisly death within the park that could have connections to his own past. As the investigation deepens, personal history and professional duty collide.

Supporting Bana is Sam Neill as Paul Souter, Yosemite’s long-serving chief ranger and an old friend of Turner. Lily Santiago plays Naya Vasquez, a former LAPD officer making a fresh start as a park ranger. Rosemarie DeWitt appears as Turner’s ex-wife Jill Bodwin, while Wilson Bethel takes on the role of Shane Maguire, a former military man turned wildlife officer.

“I love stripping all the cheats away, stripping all the more modern tools that people can use,” Smith added to Tudum. “It really gets down to the character and what they can find within themselves.”

Directors for the series include Thomas Bezucha (Fargo), Neasa Hardiman (Jessica Jones), and Nick Murphy (The Awakening). Production companies behind Untamed include John Wells Productions, Escape Artists, Bee Holder Productions, and Syndicate Entertainment. With a setting as iconic as Yosemite and a premise packed with tension, Untamed looks poised to join Netflix’s growing slate of prestige thrillers.
