Miami is calling, and Joseph Kosinski is answering. The Top Gun: Maverick director has signed on to bring Miami Vice back to life on the big screen, giving the legendary ’80s cop show another shot at cinematic glory.
Universal Pictures has recruited Kosinski, currently one of Hollywood’s most in-demand directors, to helm the project. The script is being crafted by Dan Gilroy, the Oscar-nominated writer behind Nightcrawler and more recently, several standout episodes of Andor. Gilroy is working off an earlier draft by Top Gun: Maverick co-writer Eric Warren Singer. Meanwhile, Dylan Clark (The Batman) and Kosinski himself are attached as producers.

For those in need of a refresher, Miami Vice originally aired from 1984 to 1990, starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as undercover cops with a passion for flashy suits and fast cars. Michael Mann executive-produced the TV show and later directed the 2006 movie version, featuring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx. Though the film had a rocky reception at first, it’s aged better than expected.
Not everyone was a fan, though. Colin Farrell admitted to Total Film, “I didn’t like it so much – I thought it was style over substance and I accept a good bit of the responsibility… I think we missed an opportunity to have a friendship that also had some elements of fun.”

Kosinski, whose resume includes Tron: Legacy, Oblivion, and the upcoming Brad Pitt-led racing movie F1, has a packed schedule. He’s also attached to a UFO conspiracy thriller with Apple, which suggests Miami Vice might not be his immediate next project. Still, excitement is already brewing for what he could bring to Crockett and Tubbs’ next chapter.
No casting news yet—so, for now, fans can speculate wildly about who’ll don the designer jackets and shades. But with Kosinski at the helm and Gilroy on script duties, the Miami Vice revival already feels a lot more promising than just another dusty reboot.
