The highly anticipated Joker: Folie à Deux is gearing up for its October release, and the Venice Film Festival director has offered a tantalizing glimpse into what audiences can expect. This sequel to the 2019 hit Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix, has been generating buzz ever since the original film captivated audiences. As part of the 2024 Venice Film Festival lineup, Joker: Folie à Deux will have its moment in the spotlight.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Alberto Barbera, the festival’s artistic director, provided intriguing insights into the upcoming sequel. He revealed that Joker: Folie à Deux is “much darker” and described it as “an incredibly original film,” adding to the excitement surrounding its release.
When asked about the sequel, Barbera responded enthusiastically, saying:
If you expect just a second part of the previous one, exactly the same kind of narrative and situation and so on, you are wrong, because the theme is much darker. It is much more inventive from every point of view. It’s completely unexpected. I think it is very bold, and brave, and creative, and an incredibly original film.

Although Joker: Folie à Deux draws inspiration from the Joker character in the Batman comics, director Todd Phillips has reimagined many aspects of the story. Notably, Harley Quinn is given a new origin as a patient at Arkham State Hospital, distinct from her traditional backstory. So Barbera’s comments have further heightened the intrigue surrounding the unique and innovative direction Phillips is taking.
We can anticipate Joker: Folie à Deux to continue the fearless and fascinating take on the character. Phillips himself has remarked that the film should feel as if it was created by crazy people, stating, “I always said, early on, the film should feel as if it was made by crazy people. Like the inmates are running the asylum,” adding, “It does feel like a big swing. You just go, ‘Well, fuck it. Why not? What are we all doing here, if not to do that?’”
Joker: Folie à Deux will be in cinemas worldwide October 4.
