Alien: Romulus hits theaters today, and the positive reactions are offering a much-needed sense of relief for the franchise’s long-suffering fans. While no film has lived up to the first two in the series, Romulus looks to have come the closest. Following two prequel films helmed by the original director, Ridley Scott, the series looks to finally be heading in a positive direction with this new sequel.
Early reviews have Alien: Romulus achieving a Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, currently boasting an impressive 82%. This score makes it the third-highest-rated film in the series, trailing only behind the original Alien with 93% and its highly praised sequel Aliens with 94%.
The fact that Alien: Romulus has debuted with a higher score than any of its predecessors since the original two films suggests the franchise is back on track. Strong reviews could further boost the film’s opening weekend, which is currently projected to reach around $75 million globally.
John Nugent of Empire Magazine officially ranks it as the third-best film in the series, stating, “Alien: Romulus plays the hits, but crucially remembers the ingredients for what makes a good Alien film, and executes them with stunning craft and care. It is, officially, the third-best film in the series.”
Alien: Romulus appears to have fulfilled its promise of reviving the terror of the originals with practical effects and a slow-burn narrative reminiscent of Aliens. Director Fede Álvarez promised to honor the legacy of the original Alien films while breathing new life into the franchise.
In this next chapter, a crew of space explorers sets out on a perilous journey to a distant planet, where they encounter deadly xenomorphs and uncover horrifying secrets that endanger their survival. Romulus is said to be set between the events of Alien and Aliens. The official synopsis reads, “In this ninth entry in the immensely popular and enduring film series, a group of young people on a distant world find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe.”
Alien: Romulus is now playing in theaters worldwide.
