Hugh Grant, once the quintessential Hollywood romantic lead, is relishing a career resurgence as the bad guy, and audiences can’t get enough. With standout villainous performances in The Gentlemen and The Undoing, Grant has proven exceptionally adept at portraying darker characters. Now, he takes on a new challenge, headlining A24’s latest horror film, Heretic.
Heretic is a psychological horror film that follows two Mormon missionaries, played by Chloe East and Sophie Thatcher, who face terrifying consequences after knocking on the wrong door. The trailer opens with their characters going door-to-door, inviting people to learn more about the Church of Jesus Christ.
When they reach a secluded house, they are welcomed by a man named Mr. Reed (Grant) who mentions his wife is also at home to encourage the young women into his house. Initially, the conversation is friendly and centered around religion. However, the mood shifts dramatically when one of the missionaries realizes they are locked inside the house, setting the stage for a chilling turn of events.
The official synopsis for the film reads: “Two young missionaries are forced to prove their faith when they knock on the wrong door and are greeted by a diabolical Mr. Reed, becoming ensnared in his deadly game of cat-and-mouse.”
The Heretic trailer expertly combines religious themes with psychological horror, a subgenre in which A24 has thrived, as demonstrated by their 2015 success The Witch. Notably, this film marks Hugh Grant’s debut with A24, building on his recent acclaim for playing villainous characters.
Heretic is written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the creative duo who gained recognition for their script for John Krasinski’s 2018 horror hit A Quiet Place. Heretic is slated to have a theatrical release on November 15 in the United States. The UK release date is still pending, but we’ll keep you updated as soon as it’s confirmed.
