With ‘Alien: Romulus’ Thriving at the Box Office, What’s Next for the Franchise?

‘Alien: Earth’ is poised to be our next venture into the Alien universe!

Alien: Romulus, released at the tail end of the summer movie season, has turned into a surprise hit, captivating fans of the long-running franchise and raking in an impressive $283 million at the global box office. This achievement is particularly remarkable given the film’s modest budget of around $80 million—a fraction of what is typically spent on major franchise films. With Alien: Romulus adding to the franchise’s legacy, the Alien series is now on the verge of surpassing the $2 billion mark in combined global box office revenue.

As the film continues to perform well, fans are naturally wondering what’s next for the Alien franchise. While there are no immediate plans for a direct follow-up on the big screen, despite director Fede Álvarez hinting at the possibility, the next chapter in this iconic saga is most likely set to unfold on television with the upcoming FX series Alien: Earth.

Alien: Earth is poised to become the first installment to hit screens after Romulus. Created by Noah Hawley for FX on Hulu, the show will bring the Alien universe to the small screen for the first time. Set 30 years before the events of Ridley Scott’s 1979 space-horror classic, Alien, the series will take place on Earth near the end of the 21st century.

Production on Alien: Earth wrapped in July, and Hawley is confident that the series will deliver something special for fans. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter he beams, “I couldn’t be happier with the show we shot,” he said, adding, “If people wanted a television series based on the world of Alien, I think I’m gonna give them something special.” The series features a large ensemble cast, including Sydney Chandler and Timothy Olyphant, adding star power to the series.

Alien: Romulus has received a positive reception from both fans and critics, earning a Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes with an impressive 86%. This score places it as the third-highest-rated film in the franchise, just behind the original Alien at 93% and its acclaimed sequel Aliens at 94%. The film has been particularly praised for bringing back the terror with its use of practical effects and a slow-burn storytelling approach reminiscent of Aliens.

If Alien: Earth is set to be our next journey into the Alien universe, the success of Alien: Romulus has certainly paved the way. Riding the momentum of a hit film will be incredibly advantageous for the upcoming TV series. We’ll keep you updated on any new developments regarding Alien: Earth, but for now, Romulus is still playing in theaters worldwide.
