‘Y2K’ Trailer A “Global Computer Apocalypse” Unfolds in A24’s Horror-Comedy

Tamagotchi’s go haywire!

A24 has unveiled the first trailer for Y2K, its R-rated horror-comedy featuring Jaeden Martell, Rachel Zegler and Julian Dennison. The film envisions a scenario where the feared computer crisis the ‘Millennium Bug’ from 1999 actually materializes, leading to catastrophic consequences.

Directed by former SNL cast member Kyle Mooney, Y2K will make its world premiere at this year’s SXSW Film Festival before hitting theaters on December 6.

The trailer gives us a hilarious peek at the mayhem that erupts when 1990s tech, including Tamagotchis, goes rogue. In one unforgettable scene, a character frantically yells, “A Tamagotchi just drilled through a chick’s head!”—who knew virtual pets had a dark side.

Set on New Year’s Eve 1999, the film, written by Evan Winter, follows two high school misfits (Martell and Dennison) who decide to crash the final big party of the millennium. As midnight strikes, their night spirals into a frenzy beyond their wildest expectations.

The film is built around the concept of the Millennium Bug. For those who might not recall the Y2K hysteria, here’s the gist: it was feared that as the year 2000 approached, a massive computer glitch would strike global systems. This was because older computers, using a two-digit year format like ’99’, would mistakenly interpret the new millennium as ‘1900’ instead of ‘2000’, potentially triggering widespread chaos and disaster.

All of this makes for a hilarious take on the situation, especially for millennials who remember getting swept up in the ridiculous panic of the time.

Y2K will be released in cinemas December 6.
