A Sequel to ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ is in the Works as Plot and Returning Cast Unveiled

Disney is reportedly working on a sequel to the 2000s classic.

Nearly two decades have passed since the release of The Devil Wears Prada, the iconic comedy-drama set in the high-stakes world of fashion magazines. This time lapse is set to be a focal point in the anticipated sequel being developed by Disney, as Meryl Streep’s Miranda Priestley is dealing with the decline of magazines.

Officially moving forward, The Devil Wears Prada 2 will continue the story based on Lauren Weisberger’s novel. The original 2006 film, which starred Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt followed a journalism graduate navigating her challenging role at a high fashion magazine under the demanding Miranda Priestley. The film was both a critical and commercial success, earning Streep an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe win, along with a Golden Globe nomination for Blunt.

Variety reports that the sequel will depict Miranda Priestly facing the twilight of her career amid the downturn of traditional magazines. Additionally, Puck has revealed that Emily Blunt will return as Emily Charlton, now a high-ranking executive at a luxury conglomerate. Aline Brosh McKenna, the original screenwriter, is also confirmed to be on board for the sequel.

Whether Anne Hathaway, the third key member of the original cast, will join the sequel remains uncertain. Fans of the first film might be disheartened by the lack of confirmation regarding Hathaway’s return, though it might not come as a shock. Hathaway has previously mentioned that while she found the concept of a sequel “tempting,” she felt the opportunity had passed, particularly as the journalism landscape has shifted from print to digital.

The original film, featuring Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt as the beleaguered assistants to the formidable Miranda Priestly at the fictional high-fashion magazine Runway, was a significant success, grossing over $325 million globally. Initially published as a novel in 2003, the story is partially inspired by author Lauren Weisberger’s experiences working as a personal assistant to influential Vogue editor Anna Wintour.

A decade after the first book, Lauren Weisberger released a sequel titled Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns, where Andy, becomes the editor of a bridal magazine and is in the midst of her own wedding plans. Although Miranda Priestly remains a significant figure, with Andy having to face her past upon encountering Miranda again. Despite current plot details being somewhat vague, The Devil Wears Prada 2 could diverge from Weisberger’s novel by focusing more on Miranda and Emily, while still incorporating elements from the 2013 book.
