Antony Starr has commented on The Boys ending with season 5. With showrunner Eric Kripke previously explaining that despite Prime Video’s interest in more episodes, he believes this is the perfect time to wrap up the series, staying true to his original plan and Starr is fully on board.
The actor from New Zealand has played Homelander, the ruthless leader of The Seven, across four seasons, skillfully bringing to life one of TV’s most diabolical characters. However, every great journey must conclude, and the curtain will soon fall on the satirical superhero series after its fifth season. This announcement came just before the arrival of the fourth season in June.
During a discussion on Happy Sad Confused with Josh Horowitz and fellow actors from The Boys, Starr openly discussed the series’ conclusion after season 5. Reflecting on his past experience with a show that extended beyond its natural endpoint, Starr didn’t hold back in describing the impact of a show that goes on too long saying “it was fucking horrible.”
Starr appears unconcerned this time as he discusses Kripke’s strategy to conclude The Boys after season five, aiming to secure its legacy.
[Kripke] started the show saying that this was always in his head to go five seasons. And, of course, I don’t know about you guys, but I was sitting there going, ‘Pff, we’ll see. Oh, we shall see. It might only go two.’ But, no, the show has done well. I think everyone wants to go out on a strong note, and I think there’s nothing worse – and I’ve been involved in a show that did this, it was fucking horrible – you do that last season and it’s shit. And you get remembered very poorly and you’ve got to kind of wear that. I like to think that we will go out on a really strong note and I think we all deserve it.

Starr firmly believes in the adage that too much of a good thing can lead to overkill, a sentiment he applies broadly to a TV series, including The Boys. While some fans support the decision for the show to conclude after Season 5, others would gladly see it continue for another decade. However, series such as The Walking Dead have demonstrated that prolonged runs can lead to a decline in viewership over time.
Although the raunchy and gory superhero series could have plenty of stories to continue showcasing the debauchery of our favorite ‘Supes’ beyond five seasons, Starr seems happy enough that ending on a high note would effectively secure the show’s legacy.
In the twisted universe of The Boys, super-powered individuals are hailed as heroes by the public and exploited by the corporate giant Vought International for profit. Beyond their heroic façades, most of these “supes” reveal themselves to be self-absorbed, arrogant, and morally bankrupt, making for downright exceptional TV.
You can catch The Boys on Amazon Prime Video, season four is currently airing, with the season finale scheduled for next week on July 18. Stay tuned for our comprehensive season verdict and review shortly after.
