Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, better known as the musician Bad Bunny, has officially joined the cast of Happy Gilmore 2. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the Grammy-winning artist is stepping into another high-profile acting role, following his recent success on the big screen. Bad Bunny’s involvement in the sequel adds a different dynamic to the beloved sports comedy franchise, helmed by Adam Sandler, but details about his character remain under wraps.
The sequel to the 1996 hit will see Adam Sandler reprise his iconic role as Happy Gilmore, the hockey player turned golf sensation. Directed by Kyle Newacheck, who previously collaborated with Sandler on Netflix’s Murder Mystery, Happy Gilmore 2 is set to continue the story of the unlikely sports hero, though specific plot details are being kept tightly under wraps.
Sandler, who is also co-writing the screenplay with longtime collaborator Tim Herlihy, recently shared a behind-the-scenes image of Happy’s classic Boston Bruins jersey on Instagram, hinting that production is well underway.
In addition to Bad Bunny’s casting, Happy Gilmore 2 will also see the return of two key actors from the original film. Julie Bowen will reprise her role as Virginia Venit, Happy’s love interest and public relations expert from the pro golf tour. Bowen, now widely known for her award-winning role as Claire Dunphy on ABC’s Modern Family, has had a diverse and successful career since her initial turn in Happy Gilmore.
Netflix recently confirmed her return, alongside Christopher McDonald, who will once again play the iconic villain Shooter McGavin, Happy’s arrogant golf rival. McDonald’s involvement had been previously announced.
Despite Adam Sandler’s long and diverse career, Happy Gilmore 2 marks only the fourth time he has revisited one of his films with a sequel all of which have been poorly received. This latest however is shaping up to be one of Sandler’s most anticipated comedy sequels. Fans are eager to see if Sandler can break his streak of underwhelming sequels and deliver a film that lives up to the original’s legacy.
