Denis Villeneuve has addressed his future involvement in the Dune franchise beyond Dune 3. Villeneuve helped introduce Frank Herbert’s epic tale of warring space-bound families to a new generation through a two-part adaptation of the first novel, with the movies released in 2021 and 2024, respectively. The upcoming third movie, which Villeneuve will direct, is set to bring Dune Messiah to the big screen, further expanding the world Herbert created. However, despite the success and scope of the Dune series, Villeneuve has made it clear that Dune 3 will be his last entry in the franchise.
The filmmaker has clarified that Dune 3 should not be seen as part of a traditional trilogy. While the first two films focused on the events of the original Dune novel, the third movie will be based on Dune Messiah, which explores the aftermath of Paul Atreides’ rise to power. Speaking to Vanity Fair, Villeneuve confirmed that while he intends to move on after three films, he is laying the “seeds” for future installments. The 56-year-old director said he plans to leave the door open for other creatives to continue the saga, ensuring the Dune universe has room to grow beyond his contributions.
Listen, if Dune: Messiah happens, it will have been many years for me on Arrakis, and I would love to do something else. I think that it would be a good idea for me to make sure that, in Messiah, there are the seeds in the project if someone wants to do something else afterwards, because they are beautiful books. They are more difficult to adapt. They become more and more esoteric. It’s a bit more tricky to adapt, but I’m not closing the door. I will not do it myself, but it could happen with someone else.

Villeneuve will write and direct the third film, and Warner Bros. has confirmed it is officially in development. The director was at the helm of 2021’s Dune: Part One, which grossed $407 million worldwide, even during its simultaneous streaming release on Max. Dune: Part Two, released in 2024, fared even better, earning $711.8 million globally.
Dune Messiah is set 12 years after the first Dune novel, so aging the cast, including stars Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, will be necessary. “That’s my problem. I know how to do that,” Villeneuve remarked.
Herbert’s 1965 sci-fi classic was long considered ‘unadaptable,’ with previous attempts, including David Lynch’s 1984 adaptation and a 2000 mini-series, falling short of expectations. Villeneuve’s adaptation, however, has succeeded in capturing the essence of the story. With Dune Messiah bringing Paul Atreides’ journey to a close, Villeneuve ensures his vision remains consistent across all 3 films. If the third film matches the success of its predecessors, Villeneuve will leave the franchise on a high note, paving the way for future filmmakers to explore the complex universe that Herbert created.
