In a world where diplomacy is usually handled behind closed doors, Heads of State kicks those doors wide open and then blows them off the hinges. The upcoming Amazon MGM action-comedy just dropped its first trailer, and it’s clear the film is going for maximum mayhem. Reuniting The Suicide Squad co-stars John Cena and Idris Elba, the action comedy is scheduled to hit Prime Video on July 2.
The premise? Think world leaders as action heroes with a shared distaste for each other. Elba plays a sharply dressed UK Prime Minister named Sam Clarke, while Cena stars as Will Derringer, a Hollywood actor turned U.S. President who still treats global diplomacy like a movie set. When a shadowy threat takes aim at their aircraft mid-flight, these two political powerhouses are forced into an uneasy alliance.

Clarke and Derringer must put their differences aside (or at least argue while dodging bullets). Their reluctant teamwork becomes the only thing standing between the world and a full-blown catastrophe. Fortunately, they’re not completely alone—enter Priyanka Chopra Jonas as Noel Bisset, an MI6 operative who brings brains, brawn, and one particularly slick car slide to the mix.
Behind the camera is Ilya Naishuller, best known for the chaos-driven action of Hardcore Henry and Nobody. That same manic energy appears alive and well here, judging by the trailer’s blend of international espionage, mid-air hijinks, and perfectly timed one-liners. The screenplay comes from Josh Appelbaum, André Nemec, and Harrison Query, with a story by Query, and it’s being pitched as Air Force One meets Midnight Run—an oddly perfect mix.

The cast is stacked beyond just its leading trio. Carla Gugino, Jack Quaid, Stephen Root, and Paddy Considine are among the supporting names. Quaid, in particular, is no stranger to explosive comedy thanks to his role in The Boys, and his character here seems to play a key part in getting the leaders out of hot water.
As Prime Video continues to crank out action comedies—following titles like G20 and A Working Man—Heads of State looks poised to keep the momentum going. With political satire, big action set pieces, and unlikely camaraderie between two of Hollywood’s most charismatic leads, this could be a standout summer streamer.
