M. Night Shyamalan and Nicholas Sparks Team Up for Genre-Bending Thriller Set to Be the Director’s Next Film

Jake Gyllenhaal will lead the cast in the screen adaptation!

In a surprising yet fascinating creative union, thriller expert M. Night Shyamalan and romance powerhouse Nicholas Sparks are partnering on a new cinematic venture. The two storytellers, known for vastly different approaches to drama, are blending their styles to co-develop a supernatural romantic thriller. The untitled film project will be an emotional journey with mysterious undertones, something fans of both creators will find intriguing.

Before heading to the big screen, the concept has already taken shape in novel form. Co-written by Sparks and based on a story both men developed, the book is titled Remain and is slated for release this fall. The film adaptation is in development alongside the novel’s completion, with Shyamalan simultaneously penning the screenplay.

Remain marks a rare genre fusion from two masters of their craft. With Shyamalan steering the eerie tension and Sparks infusing emotional depth, the story promises an unconventional love tale wrapped in psychological mystery and supernatural intrigue. The official synopsis reads:

“Remain follows New York architect Tate Donovan as he arrives in Cape Cod to design his best friend’s summer home. Donovan is looking for a fresh start after his recent discharge from a psychiatric facility where he was treated for acute depression. Still grappling with the loss of his beloved sister, Donovan meets Wren, a young woman who makes him challenge everything he knows about his logical and controlled world.”

Bringing this story to life on screen are Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor. Gyllenhaal steps into the role of Tate Donovan, a man struggling to find peace after personal tragedy, while Dynevor plays Wren, a mysterious woman who disrupts his structured life.

“Collaborating with M. Night Shyamalan has been one of the highlights of my career,” Sparks shared in a statement, clearly enthusiastic about the collaboration. He also revealed the cover design for Remain, created by longtime artistic collaborator Flamur Tonuzi. Sparks, whose literary works have frequently been adapted for film, sees this new venture as an exciting next chapter.

Although the film doesn’t yet have a release date and production status remains under wraps, anticipation is already building. Shyamalan’s reputation for tension-filled narratives combined with Sparks’ emotional depth sets Remain up as a unique genre fusion. The novel will arrive in bookstores on October 7, potentially offering a glimpse into the atmospheric world that will later unfold on screen.
