James Cameron has given an update on the progress of ‘Avatar 4‘ and ‘5,’ after previous speculation about his role as director. Despite earlier reports suggesting he might hand over the reins due to the projects’ “all-consuming” demands, Cameron clarified in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that he fully intends to direct both films—unless, as he put it, “I’m hit by a bus.”
Cameron is one of the most successful directors ever, and the massive success of both ‘Avatar’ films proves it. These groundbreaking movies not only wowed audiences around the world but also pulled in over $2 billion each at the global box office. The first ‘Avatar,’ in particular, was one of the first movies to offer an immersive 3D experience, setting a new standard for cinematic innovation.
Cameron recently shared an update on the progress of the Avatar sequels, addressing questions about his involvement as director. When asked if he still intends to personally direct the fourth and fifth installments, Cameron responded, “Sure.” You can read his full comments below:
Sure. Absolutely. I mean, they’re going to have to stop me. I got plenty of energy, love doing what I’m doing. Why would I not? And they’re written, by the way. I just reread both of them about a month ago. They’re cracking stories. They’ve got to get made. Look, if I get hit by a bus and I’m in an iron lung, somebody else is going to do it.

More updates from Pandora reveal that the movie previously titled ‘Avatar 3’ has been given a new name. This announcement came during Disney’s D23 Expo.
Avatar 3 officially titled ‘Avatar: Fire And Ash’
The film was initially rumored to be titled ‘Avatar: The Seed-Bearer,’ but Cameron has now revealed a new official title that aligns more closely with the elemental themes introduced in ‘The Way of Water.’ Cameron hinted at what’s to come, teasing that “It’s got very high emotional stakes” and promising “Even more than ever before.”
The director has teased that the Sully family is in for some unexpected twists and turns in the upcoming installment, when Avatar: Fire and Ash hits theaters around Christmas 2025. Cameron also hinted at surprises in store, saying, “The new film is not what you expect.”
