Tom Holland’s highly anticipated Spider-Man 4 appears to have found its director. Holland’s first trilogy within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has delivered some of the franchise’s most successful films. All three solo adventures of Peter Parker, including the massive hit Spider-Man: No Way Home, were helmed by Jon Watts. However, following the success of the 2021 blockbuster, Watts chose to step away from the MCU, leaving fans wondering who would take on the challenge of directing the next film.
After months of speculation and few concrete updates, it seems the mystery has been solved. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Destin Daniel Cretton, the acclaimed filmmaker behind Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is in talks to direct Spider-Man 4. Cretton’s involvement in the project would end the uncertainty surrounding who would direct the next installment in one of Hollywood’s biggest franchises.
Although official confirmation from Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures has yet to arrive, Cretton’s strong relationship with Marvel makes him a natural fit for the role. Since directing the successful Shang-Chi film in 2021, Cretton has secured an overall deal with Marvel, even helming episodes of the upcoming Wonder Man series.
As for returning talent, no deals have been officially closed for stars Tom Holland or Zendaya, but reports indicate both actors have been in contact with executives and producers. Given the massive success of the Holland-led trilogy, which grossed nearly $2 billion worldwide for Spider-Man: No Way Home alone, it seems likely both actors will return once new deals are finalized.
Rumors about the next Spider-Man movie have been swirling, with some reports suggesting a multiverse plot is in development. However, there are indications of disagreements between Sony’s Tom Rothman and Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige about the film’s direction. Feige is reportedly in favor of a more intimate story, while Rothman hopes to capitalize on the multiverse’s success, potentially bringing back Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as their respective Peter Parkers once again.
For now, fans eagerly await more concrete news about the film’s development. However, with Cretton’s potential involvement and the buzz around Spider-Man 4, excitement is building for the next chapter in the web-slinger’s MCU journey.
