Development on The Batman: Part II continues, but the road to Gotham is proving to be a long one. Matt Reeves, who wrote and directed the first film, is still deep in the process of completing the script. According to insiders cited by The Wrap, he’s been steadily submitting new pages for over six months, with a complete draft expected by the end of May.
Initially, the sequel was slated for an October 2026 release. That date has since shifted to October 1, 2027—a full year’s delay. The dual strikes by the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA in 2023 certainly didn’t help momentum. For several months, writing and development work came to a halt across Hollywood.

DC Studios co-head Peter Safran offered a public update earlier this year, saying, “James [Gunn] and I, we love Matt Reeves’ vision for The Batman Part II. And we’re looking forward to this film as much as you are. He hasn’t yet turned in a script. But what we’ve read so far is very encouraging.”
Star Robert Pattinson has also chimed in, offering a small but exciting update to Extra: “I know what it’s about now… Matt is a very careful writer, but I finally now know what it’s about. It’s very cool and I’m very excited.”

Despite the sequel’s progress being slower than some might like, Reeves’ approach is deliberate. He’s known for his methodical storytelling—less assembly line, more precision tool. This Batman universe, distinct from James Gunn’s newly restructured DCU, will continue to stand on its own.
Production is expected to begin in late 2025. Pattinson will return as Bruce Wayne, and several key cast members from the first film are expected back, including Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell. Barry Keoghan, who briefly appeared as the Joker, is rumored to return, though that has yet to be confirmed.
The Batman grossed over $770 million worldwide when it premiered in 2022. With anticipation still high and Reeves taking his time, expectations for the sequel remain sky-high, even if we have to wait a bit longer to return to Gotham.
