Nearly two decades after Will Smith’s Dr. Robert Neville faced off against a decimated New York and its infected inhabitants, I Am Legend 2 is officially in the works. Warner Bros. is bringing the post-apocalyptic world back, and this time, Smith won’t be alone—he’ll be joined by Black Panther and Creed star Michael B. Jordan.
Smith is confirmed to reprise his role as Neville, but there’s a twist: the sequel will ignore the theatrical ending where his character dies and instead follow the alternate ending released with the home video version. “What we were gonna do was the prequel,” Smith said on the REVOLTS podcast. “And [Akiva Goldsman] was like, but wait, what if we make a new version from the alternate ending, where your character is still alive.”

The sequel is still in early development, with no shooting dates set, so a release timeline remains uncertain. However, screenwriter Akiva Goldsman is back on board and has hinted that the film will begin “a few decades” after the events of the first movie. He also revealed his inspiration from The Last of Us, noting an interest in exploring the decayed beauty of a world overrun by nature after decades of abandonment.
Michael B. Jordan’s role remains mostly under wraps, but Smith shared one key piece of information: “Michael B. Jordan’s character currently is the head of a new settlement… He’s not my son.” That puts to rest early fan theories suggesting a family link. Instead, the film appears set to contrast Neville’s isolated past with a community-driven future.

The sequel will remain rooted in New York, but will also branch out to Connecticut, where Jordan’s character’s settlement is based. This expansion suggests a broader view of survival in this universe—perhaps shifting from the lone-man survival story to a larger narrative about rebuilding.
No trailer has dropped yet, and Warner Bros. has kept other casting details under wraps. Actress Alice Braga has expressed interest in returning as Anna, but no official confirmation has been made. For now, all eyes are on the creative team to bring new life to a world already left in ruins.
