James Gunn is making it clear that The Batman Part II remains a crucial piece of DC’s evolving cinematic universe. Despite delays and speculation, Gunn insists that Matt Reeves’ vision for Gotham is still “really important” to what DC is building.
Speaking to EW, he says, “What Matt’s doing is still really important, despite all stories to the contrary,” Gunn said, addressing speculation that the film had become less central to DC’s plans. Reeves’ Gotham saga may sit outside James Gunn’s restructured DC Universe but he’s still excited, confirming that a new draft of the script is due soon: “We’re supposed to see that script shortly, and I can’t wait.”

Development on the sequel has moved slowly. Originally scheduled for an October 2026 debut, the film is now expected to arrive a year later, on October 1, 2027. Gunn attributed some of the delay to the industry-wide shutdowns caused by last year’s WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, calling progress on the broader DC slate “slow moving, but it’s moving.”
While Gunn and Peter Safran continue shaping the mainline DCU, starting with a new Superman film just a month away from release. The Batman remains in its own continuity. “James [Gunn] and I, we love Matt Reeves’ vision for The Batman Part II,” Safran said in an earlier update. “And we’re looking forward to this film as much as you are. He hasn’t yet turned in a script. But what we’ve read so far is very encouraging.”

Robert Pattinson, who will return as Bruce Wayne, recently gave a brief update to Extra: “I know what it’s about now… Matt is a very careful writer, but I finally now know what it’s about. It’s very cool and I’m very excited.”
The first film earned more than $770 million globally when it released in 2022, and Reeves has been steadily building out what he’s called his “epic crime saga.” Other returning cast members are expected to include Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, Colin Farrell, and Barry Keoghan who briefly appeared as the Joker, is rumored to return, though that has yet to be confirmed.
As for casting the main DCU’s Batman and Wonder Woman, Gunn says that hasn’t happened yet. But he confirmed, “a Wonder Woman movie is being written right now.”
